Q.10. The distance between two stations A and B is 450 km. A train starts at 4 PM from A and moves towards B at an average speed of 60 km/hr. Another train starts from B at 3:20 PM and moves towards A at an average speed of 80 km/hr. How far from A will the two trains meet and at what time ?

দুটি স্টেশন A এবং B এর মধ্যে দূরত্ব 450 কিমি। একটি ট্রেন 4 PM এ A থেকে B এর দিকে যাত্রা শুরু করে 60 কিমি/ঘন্টা বেগে। আরো একটি ট্রেন 3:20 PM এ B  থেকে A এর দিকে যাত্রা শুরু করলো 80 কিমি/ঘন্টা বেগে। কত দূরে এবং কখন দুটি ট্রেন পরস্পরে সম্মুখীন হবে ?

Solutions :  

1) Solution : 

 CP of 200 kg of rice = Rs (80×13.50+120×16) = Rs (1080+1920)= Rs 3000

Now CP = Rs 3000

gain = 20%

SP = Rs ( 120/100 × 3000) = Rs 3600

SP per kg = Rs ( 3600/200) = Rs 18

2) Solution : 

Suppose he sells 20 toffees. Then

SP = Rs 1, loss 4% => CP = Rs ( 100/96 × 1)= Rs 25/24

Now CP = Rs 25/24, gain = 20%

SP = Rs ( 120/100 × 25/24) = Rs 5/4

For Rs 5/4 , toffees sold = 20

For Rs 1, toffees sold = ( 20 × 4/5) = 16

He must sell 16 for a rupee

3) Solution : 

Let original rate be Rs x per kg

New rate per kg = ( 80% of Rs x) = Rs ( 80/100 × x ) = Rs 4x/5

280/(4x/5)  -  280/x  = 4

=>  350/x  -  280/x = 4

=> 70/x  = 4 

=> x = 70/4 = 35/2 = 17.5

Original rate = Rs 17.5 per kg

Reduced Rate = Rs ( 4/5 × 35/2 ) = Rs 14 per kg

4) Solution : 

Let MP be Rs x, then SP = 90% of Rs x = 90/100 × x = 9x/10

Now SP = Rs 9x/10 , gain = 20%

CP = Rs ( 100/120 × 9x/10 ) = 3x/4

Again, SP = 85% of Rs x = ( 85/100 × x) = 17x/20

gain = Rs ( 17x/20 - 3x/4 ) = 2x/20 = x/10

Gain % = ( x/10 × 4/3x × 100)% = 40/3 % = 13 1/3 %

5) Solution : 

Let the CP of each article be Rs x

Then CP of 16 articles = Rs 16x

SP of 15 articles = 135% of Rs 16x = (135/100 × 16x ) = 108x/5

SP of 1 article = ( 108x/5 × 1/15 ) = 36x/25

If SP is Rs 96, MP = 100

If SP is Rs 36x/25, MP = Rs ( 100/96 × 36x/25 ) = Rs 3x/2

Increase in MP over CP = ( x/2 × 1/x × 100 )% = 50%

6) Solution : 

Let the total capital be Rs x and total time be y months.

Then A invests Rs x/6 for y/6 months

B invests Rs x/3 for y/3 months

C invests Rs [ x - (x/6 + x/3)] = Rs x/2 for y months

then A : B : C

= (x/6 × y/6) : (x/3 × y/3) : (x/2 × y)

= xy/36 : xy/9 : xy/2

= 1/36 : 1/9 : 1/2

= 1 : 4 : 18

B's share = Rs ( 23000 × 4/23) = 4000

7) Solution : 

(A+B)'s 5 days' work = 5 ( 1/10 + 1/15 ) = ( 5 × 1/6 ) = 5/6

Remaining work = ( 1 - 5/6 ) = 1/6

C's 2 days' work = 1/6

(A's 5 days' work) : (B's 5 days' work) : (C's 2 days' work)

= 5/10 : 5/15 : 1/6

= 15 : 10 : 5

= 3 : 2 : 1

A's share = Rs ( 4500 × 3/6) = 2250

B's share = Rs ( 4500 × 2/6) = 1500

C's share = Rs ( 4500 × 1/6) = 750

8) solution : 

Time taken by 1 man to finish the work = ( 36×12) days = 432 days

3/4 th of work is completed by 12 women in 36 days

Whole work is completed by 12 women in ( 36 × 4/3 ) = 48 days

Time taken by 1 woman to finish the work = ( 48 × 12 ) days = 576 days

(10 men + 8 women)'s 1 day's work = ( 10/432 + 8/576)

= ( 5/276 + 1/12) = 8/216 = 1/27

Required time taken = 27 days

9) Solution : 

Work done by two pipes in 1 hour = ( 1/14 + 1/16) 

= (8+7)/112 = 15/112

Time taken by these pipes to fill the tank = 112/15 hrs = 7 7/15 hours = 7 hrs 28 mim

Due to leakage, time taken = 7 hrs 28 min + 32 min = 8 hrs

Work done by (two pipes + leak) = ( 15/112 - 1/8) = 1/112

Leak will empty the full cistern in 112 hours

10) Solution : 

Suppose two trains meet at x km from A.

[ Time taken by B to cover (450-x) km ] - [ Time taken by A to cover x km ]  = 40/60

=> (450-x)/80 - x/60  = 40/60

=> 3 ( 450 - x) - 4x = 160

=> 7x = 1190

=> x = 1190/7 = 170 

Thus the two trains meet at a distance of 170 km from A

Time taken by A to cover 170 km = 170/60 = 2 5/6 hr = 2 hr 50 min

So, the two trains meet at 6:50 PM
